Frequently Asked Questions

What is the youngest age children can start karate?

The youngest age we normally accept is 4 years old. If your child is approaching their fourth birthday, we may be able to consider an earlier start depending on their confidence, attention and readiness.

For children aged 4 to 12, we assess this during their personalised 1-to-1 trial lesson before recommending the most suitable class.

Why do children start with a personalised 1-to-1 trial lesson?

Starting somewhere new can feel daunting, particularly for younger children or anyone who is unsure what to expect.

Our personalised 1-to-1 trial lessons give children aged 4 to 12 a calm and supportive introduction before joining their regular class.

During the trial we can:

Help your child feel comfortable and build confidence

Introduce some of the basic techniques and class routines

Assess their individual needs, confidence and readiness

Recommend the most suitable class and next step

Give parents the opportunity to see how we teach and ask any questions

Teenagers and adults aged 13+ can choose either a £10 personalised 1-to-1 trial lesson or a free week of classes.

To get started, simply choose the appropriate trial option on this page and book an available session.

What should I wear to my trial lesson?

You don’t need a karate uniform for your trial. Just wear comfortable clothing that allows you or your child to move freely, such as tracksuit bottoms or leggings and a T-shirt.

If you decide to enrol afterwards, we’ll explain everything you need for your regular classes, including your uniform.

How long are the classes, and should I attend twice a week?

Tigers classes for ages 4 to 6 are 30 minutes. Dragons & Family classes for ages 7 to 12 and Teens & Adults classes for ages 13+ are 60 minutes.

Our programmes are designed around attending two classes each week. We strongly recommend attending both whenever possible, as regular attendance helps students build confidence, develop their techniques and make consistent progress.

When are the classes?

Is martial arts safe for children?

Yes. Safety is a priority in every class.

At our full-time Neath centre, we have more than 143 square metres of matted training space, with viewing areas for parents and guardians.

Our instructors and leaders are trained to teach safely and appropriately for each age group, and first aid provision is in place.

We also have a comprehensive child protection policy, available on request.

Can you support children with additional learning needs or physical disabilities?

We aim to make our classes as inclusive and supportive as possible.

The structure and routine of martial arts training can be particularly helpful for children with additional learning needs, and we work closely with parents to understand each child’s individual needs, strengths and challenges.

For children aged 4 to 12, the personalised 1-to-1 trial lesson gives us the opportunity to meet your child, discuss any additional support they may need and assess how we can help them participate safely and confidently.

We will always do our best to accommodate each child. In some circumstances, however, individual health, physical or safety considerations may affect what we are able to provide.

How much are the classes?

Tiger Tots classes are £40 per month. Dragons & Family and Teens & Adults classes are £56 per month, with family discounts of up to 25% available.

For comparison, many families now pay significantly more for activities such as swimming, dance or gymnastics. Our programmes combine structured martial arts training with confidence, discipline, focus, resilience and character development, so we work hard to keep our fees accessible while maintaining a high standard of coaching and support.

Our monthly class fees increase by just £1 each January to help us keep pace with rising running costs while continuing to maintain the quality of our programmes.

For new students, our introductory programme is the £59 6-Week Confidence & Karate Programme. Children aged 4 to 12 normally begin with a £10 personalised 1-to-1 trial lesson, and if you enrol, that £10 is credited towards the programme. Teenagers and adults aged 13+ can choose either a free week of classes or a £10 personalised 1-to-1 trial lesson before starting the six-week programme.

The six-week programme is designed to give new students a structured, confident start and includes six weeks of classes, a customised karate uniform and temporary access to our Members Online training and support resources.
