More than Just Karate - A guide to our programmes
More Than Just Karate.
Seven Star Martial Arts. A Clear Guide to Our Programmes (Age 4+)
Choosing a martial arts school can feel confusing at first, especially if you are trying to match a class to your child’s personality. Some children need confidence. Some need focus and better listening. Some need a positive routine and stronger behaviour. Others simply need a place where they can grow steadily, with clear standards and supportive coaching.
At Seven Star Martial Arts, we are more than a karate class. With well established classes in Neath, and in Sketty, Swansea and a proven track record, We use traditional karate as the vehicle, but our goal is character development. We help students and parents build daily practices and habits that shape strong, positive traits for life. The aim is to develop confident, resilient individuals who can communicate well and handle new environments, whether that is school now, or college, university, and employment later.
This guide explains our age groups, what happens in class, and how progress works, so you can choose the right programme with confidence.
Our programmes by age
Tigers Programme (Age 4 to 6)

Tigers is our youngest programme and it is designed for early confidence, focus, listening skills, and positive behaviour.
Classes are 30 minutes, twice per week, and they are deliberately structured. Young children do best when they know what is expected and what happens next, so we keep lessons predictable, upbeat, and consistent. We use positive reinforcement, simple goal setting, and language patterns that help children feel successful and want to keep trying.
Progress is made visible in two main ways. First, we use weekly Tiger Tag. Some weeks are skill focused, such as punching, kicking, and stretching. Other weeks are character focused, such as attitude, discipline, focus, and positive behaviour. Second, we use Belt Graduations on a regular cycle, so children can see that effort leads to achievement.
If your child is shy or unsure, Tigers is also where our personalised one to one trial is especially helpful. It gives children a calm, private start, helps them settle at their own pace, and includes their first belt and certificate so they leave with a real sense of achievement.
Dragons and Family Programme (Age 7 to 12)

Dragons is for school age children who are ready for more technical learning, more responsibility, and a longer class.
Classes are 60 minutes, twice per week. Parents can join in, but they do not have to. Many families like having the option because it supports confidence and creates a shared routine at home. It also helps parents understand the coaching style and the standards, so they can reinforce the same habits outside the dojo.
The Dragons syllabus includes striking, blocks, forms, self defence, sparring, endurance, and teamwork challenges. Alongside the physical training, we deliberately teach character themes such as motivation, perseverance, empathy, humility, and leadership. This is where many parents notice a shift over time. Children start to carry themselves differently. They speak more clearly. They recover faster after mistakes. They learn how to keep their composure when something feels difficult.
Dragons progress through colour striped belts, with graduations every two months. Progress is based on consistent effort, behaviour, and growth. This keeps the focus on long term development, not a one off performance.
Teens and Adults (Age 13 plus)

Our Teens and Adults programme is for people who want a structured challenge, real skill development, and a clear pathway of progression.

Classes are 60 minutes, twice per week, and progression is measured through our gup grading system. Eligibility is based on three things. Attendance, syllabus knowledge, and technical skill. This matters because it makes progress fair and earned. Teenagers in particular often respond well to this structure. They know what the standard is, they know what they are working toward, and they can feel the pride that comes from meeting the requirements.

For adults, the same structure creates consistency and momentum. It is not just a workout. It is a skill based practice that builds discipline, confidence, and a stronger mindset.
What a typical class looks like
Across all programmes, we keep classes predictable and well organised. That matters because children learn best when they know what is expected and what comes next.
A typical class includes:
A clear start and warm up to settle focus
Step by step coaching on skills and drills
Repetition to build confidence and control
Positive feedback so effort is rewarded
A clear finish so students leave feeling successful
We train in a safe, matted environment with trained instructors, and we work hard to make the first experience welcoming, especially for nervous children.
The Three Elements of Success
Traditional karate is the vehicle. Character is the outcome.
Our programmes are built around the Three Elements of Success:
Good attitude and behaviour at home
Good attitude and behaviour at school
Good attitude and behaviour and regular attendance in class
These elements are simple, but powerful. They give students clear standards to aim for, and they give parents a clear way to support progress outside the dojo. When those three elements are in place, children improve faster, retain more, and build habits that stand them in good stead for the future.
How progress is measured and kept motivating
Parents often ask, how do I know this is working.
We make progress visible and motivating:
Tigers use weekly Tiger Tag and regular Belt Graduations
Dragons progress through colour striped belts with graduations every two months, based on effort, behaviour, and growth
Teens and Adults progress through the gup grading system, with clear requirements based on attendance, syllabus knowledge, and technical skill
This matters because children stay motivated when they can see what they are working toward, and when they are recognised for consistent effort.
A clear note for parents. This only works with follow through.
Our programme takes commitment. Confidence, focus, and positive behaviour are built through repetition and routine, not overnight. The students who do best are the ones whose parents back the process at home. Good parents do not look for a quick fix. They choose consistency. They keep attendance steady, they support practice, and they follow through even when motivation dips. If you are willing to lead by example and stay disciplined with your child’s development, the results are worth it.
